Recently, we took to Twitter to find out what tools project managers find the most helpful. We were lucky enough to be inundated with plenty of responses, inspiring us to create a blog post that will help budding project managers find their feet with the use of the best project management tools around!

If you’re in need of a system to bring together the processes involved in creating your project, have a look at the tools other project managers found most useful.

ProofHub

ProofHub is the ideal all-rounder for people getting their foot in the door of project management. If you’re working with a project team, you’ll be able to assign, update and edit tasks as well as use discussion topics to share ideas and post updates on how you’re getting along.

You can also use ProofHub to upload documents related to the project, so anyone who needs to can proofread and review them. For project managers, there’s a special project manager view which allows you to keep an eye on everything that’s going on and view insights on the progression of projects.

Primavera

For those looking for something slightly more large-scale, Primavera is the tool for you. Used primarily for large enterprises, this project management tool has a wide variety of features which project managers will find useful.

These include real-time collaboration with team members so you can work on a project at the same time as your team, specialised project dashboards and budget forecast projections so you can keep on top of your finances.

Outplanr

If you’re looking for a cheaper solution as you start out in your project management career, but still want to use one of the best project management tools out there, then Outplanr may be the solution you need.

This comprehensive package includes a calendar, real-time project tracking and personal to-do lists so you can keep track of what you need to get done – as well as see what everyone else is up to.

With an intuitive app and multiple integrations, Outplanr is ideal for anyone who loves to organise but also likes to keep a tight budget.

Trello

If it’s a very simple and cheap solution you’re after, Trello can work as a good basic for beginners looking to get into the industry.

With its Kanban style layout, Trello allows users to easily add other users, assign them to tasks and have an overall view of what’s yet to be done, what’s being completed and what has been completed. For smaller projects with fewer requirements, Trello is the ideal minimal solution.

Excel

If you’re after a tool that will allow you to be as creative as possible with your own projects and allow you to track the budget, manage team members and keep updated on the latest progress, something as simple as good old Excel may be just what you need.

Rather than investing in a new solution, you can set up a share file that allows everyone to have access to the same file, meaning each member of the team can update as necessary. Excel is a favourite for project manager traditionalists and still earns its place in our top five of best project management tools.
